Vision Boards

What is a Vision Board?

Although it can have many other names, a vision board is a powerful tool used by many to help them keep their goals and dreams in the forefront of their minds. Essentially, it is often a large poster board, filled with words or images that you have gathered and arranged, and that reflect the things you want to achieve in life.

The main idea behind a vision board is that by seeing these images all the time, you will be constantly reminding yourself to work toward achieving your goals in order to get there. While some will say just envisioning your dreams will make them come true, I am a believer in putting action into visions, which is why I suggest using a goal setting regime and a success journal to assist you in your path.

There are different types of vision boards – and what you created will be unique to you. You may search out some examples of boards here on our site to get some ideas, but ultimately you are the designer of your vision. Remember, there is no right or wrong way of doing this.

How to Make a Vision Board

1. Gather supplies – you will need: poster board, scissors, glue, old magazines, pictures.

2. Think about you goals. Spend time thinking about what you most want to accomplish, and organize your thoughts onto paper. It’s a good idea to categorize them if you can.

For Example:

My goals are:

To save $6000 to take my family on vacation next winter.

To enter in the 5K race in my city next May.

To spend one weekend a month camping with my children all summer.

To spend 2 hours a week on (insert favourite hobby) by January 20XX

  3. Once you have finished making your list, start looking through your old magazines and pictures. If you find pictures or words that you feel relate to your goals, rip them out and put them in a pile. Don’t worry about having nice edges on them right now – it’s more important to continue finding the images. Don’t forget to utilize your personal photos as well; this is often a valuable visual tool.

 4. When you have completed collecting a pile of pictures and words, go back through and make sure they all match what you see as your goals and dreams. Trim up the ones you are going to keep if you like.

 5. Some people just randomly arrange them on a page, others organize them into categories, others still put a picture of themselves when they were really happy in the centre – do whatever you feel is best for you! Lay them all out on the poster board.

 6. Once the poster board is laid out the way you would like it, glue everything down and let it all dry.

 7. Hang your vision board up somewhere where you can easily see if. It’s best if it’s the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night.
