All or Nothing?

Are you an “all or nothing” person when it comes to setting goals? In other words, you set a goal, but put off starting it because you can’t possibly comprehend being able to finish it?

If that’s the case, maybe one of your challenges is that your goals are just too big to tackle. It’s wonderful to have visions of your someday, and goals to get you there, but sometimes the goal we set for ourselves are so big, it’s hard to envision yourself actually doing them.

Have you ever heard the old question “How do you eat an elephant?” This refers of course to the sometimes daunting task of achieving big goals. The answer to that question? “You eat it one bite at a time.”

It is far too frustrating to set out on a path with only a vision of your big goal, and no plan of how to get there. Going at goal setting with an all or nothing approach can be hazardous to your ability to achieve those goals. Instead, I suggest taking your goals one bite at a time. Break them down into bite-sized pieces. Daily, if you can, weekly for certain. Write down what you can do each day or each week to move yourself toward your goal, and then set out to do it.
