The Best of Intentions: Four Guidelines to Move Intentions to Reality

Well it’s that time of year again. That one time of year where we continually hear the question; what’s your New Year Resolution? This is also the time of year where so many great intentions get blindsided by old habits. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of formalizing a New Year Resolution. Heck I’m an advocate of setting resolutions throughout the year. But it’s something about the tradition (and peer pressure) of having a New Year Resolution that causes even some of the die hard to pony up and identify at least one goal.

The Secret to Life

In my book the Power of RE I discuss Reclaiming control of your life. Far too often, we get busy and fail to make choices. In essence we let life control us. We can become like puppets with life pulling our strings. It becomes difficult to enjoy what life has to offer when we are reacting from one event to the next. One of my favourite movies is City Slickers starring Billy Crystal. Billy played the role of Mitch who had lost control of his life and wasn’t sure how to get it back.

Life Experiences Have Far Reaching Impacts

Surprise! You have a guest writer this week, and yes, by guest I mean Gary’s amazing and talented daughter, Hannah. I’ve asked my father’s permission to write this article as I am back from University for my first reading week. I thought it would bring a different perspective to this article and let everyone hear about my beginning experience of University life…I’ll leave out the wild stories, don’t worry.

We’re All Losers…

This may seem like a harsh statement, but I’m going to say it anyway. You’re a loser. But that’s okay because I’m a loser too. Everyone is. At one point or another (and more than likely more than one point) we are all losers. Despite what people might say to the contrary, being a loser is a good thing. Being a loser is what makes you a winner. I’ll tell you why.

• Until you’ve lost something, you don’t know how to appreciate what you have.

• If you win all the time, you never learn how to work hard.

When Life Snows You In

Earlier this week we got our biggest snow storm of the year yet. While it only lasted for one day, we have quite a bit of the white stuff to remind us of its visit. Due to all this snow, we've had various people in the office end up stuck in the parking lot, myself included!

Are You Throwing Away Opportunities?

Category:

I often hear people say that everything happens for a reason. That may be, but I'm more of a believer that we make our opportunities out of what life offers us. We simply cannot wait for something to come our way that screams "I'm the opportunity you've been looking for!"

Sure, if we're lucky, this might happen, but more often than not, the people that get those amazing chances are the ones that worked hard to create them for themselves.

Eminem's Take on Personal Growth

The other day my son was home for a visit from school. Well, at least he came home to get his laundry cleaned and stock up on food.

While I was trying to do work, I kept getting distracted by the blaring rap music coming from his room. I was just about ready to yell that golden phrase from the How to Parent a Teenager handbook, "Turn that music down!" But then I stopped and started listening to the words. And I was surprised.

What Motivates You?

Today I got to talking to one of my employees about exercising. He was having a hard time finding an activity he enjoyed. He didn't like running, swimming, walking or playing sports.

It got me thinking about motivation and what keeps us going. Do you ever find that you have a much easier time doing the activities you enjoy than the ones you don't. You leave the ones you dislike to the very last moment or not at all, even if there is a good reason for doing them.

New Beginnings Aren't Just for the Young

Last week was my son’s first full week in his new place. He spent his first year of school commuting back and forth from home, but decided this year he wanted a change of scenery and the opportunity to experience living on his own.

So after a $200 grocery bill and a sore back from lugging in all his stuff, he was gone. Well, not really, he was down this weekend with dirty laundry and demands of a steak dinner. Ahh, kids.

Your Elevator Speech

Have you ever heard of an elevator speech? It’s a marketing term, which basically says that if you step onto an elevator with someone, and they ask you what your company does, you should be able to explain it to them before the elevator doors open on your floor and you have to exit.
