Time Management in a Nutshell
What happens when you ask a successful person how they achieved their status? Of course they could say I was lucky, I knew the right people or I worked really hard and had a good education. But, the one thing they will forget to tell you, that is very important, is that they were good at personal time management.
So, what is personal time management?
You can define time management in several different ways. It is usually associated with the idea that you use your time to its maximum potential.
Personal time management works like economics, where its main objective is to allocate your time properly so you can maximize the amount of work you can accomplish within a day. With less than 24 hours in a day (if you want to sleep) it is critically important that you use your time where it matters most to you.
What problems arise with poor time management?
There are many major indicator of poor time management. How about when you cram something in at the last minute to meet a deadline or rescheduling meetings because you forgot them? What about bouncing back and forth all day on projects not getting anything accomplished? If this sounds familiar, than time management is something you may want to work on, because, what most people don’t realize is that poor time management actually lead to poor performance.
Another big factor in poor time management can be over confidence. Often times, we take on too much work thinking we will impress others and get it all done in time. The results can turn out positive, but sometimes you actually end up putting less effort into the projects and the extra load causes inefficiency and a waste of your time.
Overall, poor time management is a result of false notions that allow someone to believe they can do anything within a short period of time. However, they fail to foresee other factors that may affect their schedules.
What are the benefits of proper time management?
When you start to practice proper time management you will see an improvement in yourself. Proper time management will allow you to eliminate losses, plan each day effectively, allocate time for more important tasks, learn to refuse excessive workload and ensure that you long-term goals are not neglected. More importantly though, proper time management can alleviate stress.
Proper time management, like most things, must be monitored and reviewed regularly. If you find flaws in your management process, you must address them in order to achieve your maximum efficiency.
Long term objectives are also very important in proper time management. Although neglected often because of specific deadlines, they are just as important as any short term goal. Because a long term goal is stuck out in the future, we perceive it as having no pressure associated with it. However, in order for time management to work, you have to consider both your daily and long term goals.
In the end, proper time management takes lots of practice in order to be successfully applied to real life. For some, it will take less time than other. But remember, you are not expected to change your whole life in one night. Work at it, and as you find the discrepancies in your time management skills, work at fixing them. Efficient time management is a long-term process of learning, where eventually you will develop the skills that work for you and start to make proper use of your time.
