The Secret to a Great Tomorrow
Anyone who’s ever been in a course with me before will find today’s lesson familiar. Usually, toward the end of the class, keynote or workshop, I tell them one of the key secrets of my success. Today I have decided to share it with you, my faithful readers, as well.
If you take anything away from my courses, my speeches, or this ezine, let it be this: Keep a Success Journal.
Yes, I do have one that I created for sale, and I always appreciate it when people see the value in that and purchase it, but that’s not what this is about. I’m not trying to hard-sell you on this, I’m trying to give you the best, most honest advice that I can, and advice that I truly believe will make a difference in your life.
Get yourself a journal. It could be a “real” one or it could be just a blank book. Whatever it takes to get you started.
Every night, right before bed, flip it open, and jot down the date. Then, I want you to write down 3 – 5 things that were good about that day. It doesn’t have to be momentous or earth-shattering, it just has to be something you felt positive about that day. Do the same thing the next night. And the next, and the next, and the . . . well you get the idea. Don’t watch TV after, or read after, you want to make sure the journal is the last thing you do before you close your eyes.
As you drift off to sleep, your subconscious mind will automatically focus on the last things you were thinking about that day. Normally, as we fall asleep, we worry. We spend our time wondering “what if?” Or “did that get done?” or “what will tomorrow bring?” We often wake up as exhausted as we were when we went to sleep! Instead, let those thoughts be about the things that went right that day.
Now, I know some of you will procrastinate about this one. In fact, I’m fairly certain I’ll get some emails saying “Gary, I just can’t FIND anything positive in my day; I’ll have to really look for it!” And there is the “a-ha” moment. It may take you a few days, it may take you a couple of weeks, but pretty soon you’ll notice that you’re spending time each day looking for good things that are happening so you can write them in your journal. The more you look for these things, the more you will find them. Soon you’ll be waking up ready to face the day, and you’ll be spending time every day looking for the positive aspects of it, rather than the negative.
This secret is a great one, but I don’t mind if you share it with your friends and family. In fact, I encourage you to do that! If this is the only advice you ever take from my ezine, I’ll be happy. Go out, today, and start a Success Journal. If you’re having trouble getting started, send me an email. And, if you’re on your way and feeling great – let me know that too! I always enjoy feedback from our readers.
Remember – get a journal, spend 10 or 15 minutes each night right before you go to sleep, and write out 3-5 positive things that happened that day. That’s it. You can do it!
