Overcoming Your Fear of Flying

Category:

Even though there are many safety measure and precautions conducted by airline officers and owners, there are still numbers of people who have a hard time overcoming their fear of flying. Experts say that some of these people acquire this fear from a bad experience from former flights. Others, acquire it because they have never flown before and aren’t sure what to expect. For those who have flown and still have a fear, they may have experienced prolonged or heavy turbulence which may be cause by bad weather or an aborted flight, where the airplane needs to make an emergency landing because of mechanical failures. Whether you’ve flown before or not, any of these scenarios are bound to give you a fear of flying.

Even more so, media can often impact our fears. Sometimes, when someone is exposed to tragic accidents in the air, they assume it will happen to them. Studies show that people who have witnessed an extensive coverage of an aerial accident are prone t having aviophobia sooner or later.

If you are one of those people who have developed a fear of flying and want to overcome it, here are a few step-by-step procedures you can follow:

  1. Do some research. If you are aware of what takes place in a basic flight and air travel, your mind won’t react negatively to common situations. Aviophobia stems from over anxiety about tragic air accidents and is the result of misunderstanding and having a lack of knowledge about flights and technicalities. If you are able to educate yourself about the different problems that may occur and be aware that they aren’t life threatening, you are more likely to remain calm and enjoy your flight.

  2. Make sure you have your mind cleared before and during any flight. Fear of flying is caused when you keep thinking of accidents that may occur in the air. Of course, the fear is always in the mind of the person. So, if the person can try and keep his or her mind clear from negative thoughts, you will encounter a more relaxed flight. To clear your mind of negative thoughts, it’s best to practice relaxation techniques before and during the flight. Take deep breathes that are controlled and keep your mind occupied by reading, listening to music or watching a movie.

  3. Learn about “desensitization”. Experts say that this process is conducted during a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). If you have a fear of flying, or any fear for that matter, this process slowly exposes you to the situations and condition of the fear until he or she is able to face and overcome them.

  4. If you are still petrified of flying, maybe a professional can help you. Some people have deep-rooted aviophobia and have a harder time overcoming their fear of flying. If your fear has reached new heights and affects your life in general, it may be best to consult a professional. This doctor will be able to recommend treatment options and possible prescribe medication to help you get through your fear. If you have a mild condition, you may just learn new relaxation techniques that you can administer at any time when you need to manage and control anxiety attacks.
