Keys to Overcoming Your Fear of Public Speaking
Most people have decided that they will never speak in front of a crowd. All they know is that they aren’t comfortable doing so and they aren’t going to risk stepping outside their comfort zone. But, what most people don’t know is that there are a few keys that may just help them overcome their fear of public speaking.
People gain influence over others. One of the most notable feats that they are likely to possess is the ability to speak well before a group of people or before an audience. Think about most of the famous people in history; most of them, if not all, are good speakers in their own right.
Think back in history when people would win over the crowd through their speaking powers and verbal rhetoric. As far as everyone was concerned, these people were famous individuals that possessed the most quotable quotes and often listened to statements and opinions. But, were they any better than you and I at speaking or did they just have influence over others?
There are a few key points that need to be considered when overcoming your fear of public speaking, whether you’re in front of a crowd, colleagues, organization or the public.
First, you need to learn the proper way of preparing. Preparation is the key to understanding how things can go about, especially since almost everyone gets nervous when they know they will be speaking in front of crowds.
If prepared properly, not only will you feel more comfortable during the course of the speech, but it will initially help you feel better about the situation and what you will be saying and doing.
It is essential that you choose, organize and systemize all of the possible materials and points you can use during your speech. It doesn’t hurt to have extra material if extra time arises.
The second key to overcoming your fear of public speaking is to practice and rehearse your speech. When practicing, make sure you don’t read directly through your notes, but rather read from key points and talk true to what you know. If you are well knowledge in what you will say, you are likely to be more confident.
Overall, the more time that is spent on rehearsing your speech or topic, the better it will be. This time won’t only provide you with a mastery of the subject matter, but also a more in depth discussion of it that you will be able to follow upon questioning.
Another key to follow is to take into careful consideration about the presentation. You don’t have to be extremely intelligent or knowledgeable to be an effective speaker. However, it is important that you overcome the fear of public speaking to become an effective one.
Presentations not only require focus, but they also require the speaker to be alert for cues and signals that the audience understands what is being said. Not only that, you can also read into the audience as to how much they are enjoying the speech and adjust accordingly.
If you are comfortable, you’ll also realize that making a mistake during the presentation process is okay. There is nothing to be fearful about and it should not cause stress. Mistakes show that you are human.
The final key to overcoming your fears of public speaking is to make yourself comfortable with the key factors of your presentation. Know what may be expected so that you can address the audience accordingly.
This also means that you should be considering the demographics and cultural differences when organizing your presentation. This may be done with a little research as you prepare your material and may be valuable information that you can use to formulate your topics or discussions.
Lastly, prepare your tools and make use of necessary materials that will assist in making the presentation. Don’t forget to try using gestures, graphic representations or even video clips when appropriate. Overall though, make sure the support material only supports what you are saying and does not take away from you as a speaker.
We can all be nervous about speaking in front of crowds, but with a little preparation, practicing and support, it will certainly be easier to overcome your fear of public speaking.
