Investing in Yourself Spiritually
I don’t think there is anything more personal and more unique than ones spirituality. It has been defined as “an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the deepest values and meanings by which people live.” It can include religion and it can also be “spiritual but not religious”. Investing in yourself spiritually is something that has either been ingrained in you or something you are just learning how to do. An investment in your spirituality encompasses a myriad of thoughts and practices including everything from prayer, meditation and yoga to simply appreciating the wonderment of the world around you.
I think the words peaceful, joyful and contentment can be interchanged with the word spiritual because it’s about the parts of you that are not about material things or the physical comforts at home. It’s about your soul and your spirit.
Investing in your spirit and your heart can be as simple as thinking positively, being thankful and being forgiving and as deliberate as meditation or contemplation. In my mind it’s about the raw emotion of being in awe of something so unimaginable that you walk away still thinking about it. Albert Einstein said “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science.” They call them the Seven Wonders of the World for that very reason. Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Pyramids of Egypt and the tides in the Bay of Fundy are among the list of things that leave you wondering who, what, when, where, why and how.
For example, I have a friend who took a trip to Israel and experienced the amazement of being where I have read about since I was in Grade school - The Holy Land and the place many believe is the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Awe and wonderment, peace and humility along with thoughtful contemplation (in addition to a very long plane ride!) were the keys to her investment in her inner self.
But it doesn’t have to be that grandiose. It can be as simple as a walk in the woods, or a quiet time in a park or a garden. Spirituality is already within you. It takes you on a journey and you can decide whether to participate in it. If you go day to day not noticing, or appreciating, the magnitude of what’s around you it could be a very boring journey. Investing in the spiritual you is subjective and intimate and is worth the time and money.
I have this saying that I love, because I struggle to find peace on a daily basis. It reminds me of where I should be and makes me think about how to get there.
“Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
