How You Face Your Day Determines The Happiness You Get From It
By Leanne Crain
I met a lovely elderly woman some time ago while volunteering for a day. She was in a nursing home, well into her 90’s, and full of life. She was telling me that she had been living in the home for a couple of years now, and enjoyed showing me pictures of her family, and telling stories of the many visits they had made to see her. Although she said she wasn’t expecting visitors that day, there she was – dressed her best, hair and make-up done, jewelry on, nails painted and wearing a smile.
Curious, I questioned where she was going that day. She smiled a knowing smile and told me it didn’t matter. She had decided today was going to be a good day. When she woke up in the morning she made the decision that she was going to live today with happiness, as full as she could, and was determined to put her best foot forward. After chatting with others in the home about her, I discovered she faced every day with that attitude. Regardless of how she was feeling, what she was facing, or what would come of the day, she apparently got up every single day with the determination that she was going to bed happy at the end of it.
What a wonderful way to embrace happiness. It is a lesson I take with me, and use often in my life. When I wake up in the morning I remind myself that despite the busy day I have ahead, the challenges that will arise, and the pace at which I must go to accomplish the things I need to do – my happiness with the day is decided by how I choose to face it.
The happiness you have is not actually affected by the day itself. Indeed, the happiness you have is only affected by the attitude you have toward the way you face the day, and the way you react to everything that comes at you that day. Make sure tomorrow when you get up you put your best foot forward, wear a smile, and choose to live your day as happy as you can be.
