How To Maintain A Positive Attitude
Becoming a positive person can have an enormous impact on your life. Many of us have the desire to be positive, but it is all too easy to slip back into bad behavior and patterns that are negative. It takes a firm commitment towards being positive and the realization that it does take time to change old behaviors. There may be times when you cannot be positive or when you slip. But the key is getting back up and trying again.
There are several different things that you can do to maintain a positive attitude.
Surround Yourself With Positive Influences
If you've ever been around someone who has a really negative attitude, you may notice that within a few minutes, you're pulled into that negative spiral too. Your whole day may be shot after just a short time with this person. Negativity breeds negativity and it fosters discontent. It's important to step back and take a good look at your relationships.
If you want to maintain a positive attitude, you need to surround yourself with positive influences. If this means spending less time with someone who is consistently negative, that may be what you have to do. Chances are, once you get away from that person, you'll notice how much happier and lighter you feel and it won't be difficult. You can always speak to them about their negative outlook, but until they are ready to change and commit to having a positive attitude, you may need to reduce the amount of time you spend with them.
Smile More
It sounds overly simplistic but smiling more is one of the main secrets to maintaining a positive attitude. Smiling releases endorphins which boost your mood. Make a commitment to smile at least ten times a day at first and then increase this week by week. Challenge yourself to make other people smile throughout the day. Set a goal of five people at first and work your way up.
As you do this, you will notice how much easier it is and how much fun it can be to bring a little joy to someone else's life.
Let it Go
Letting hurtful things or rude behavior go is also a key towards staying positive. When people hurt us we can become angry and resentful. We start to let those old negative behaviors back in instead of just letting the hurt go. Try not to take things personally, even when they hurt. They are the responsibility of the person that said them – not yours. By letting things go you can stay positive.
Keep Practicing
They say practice makes perfect and that is particularly true when it comes to maintaining a positive attitude. It's simply a matter of creating a new habit, a new pattern that is positive and then practicing it every day. Before long, being positive will become second nature. While we can't be positive all the time, we can make a commitment to be positive most of the time.
