How Do You Talk to Yourself?

Have you ever stopped and noticed that you talk to yourself on a daily basis? When you’re looking in the mirror or about to give a big presentation? If not, don’t worry because it’s a very difficult action to pick up on, but is very important in your life. Strange how talking to yourself can be so important, right? But think about it, how often are you getting ready for work and you look in the mirror and say, “I hate my hair” or “I wish I was smaller” or “Everybody hates me at work, why bother going?” These are common dialogues people have with themselves every day. If you constantly talk with yourself about these negative comments daily, it will affect the overall outcome of your life. If you believe it then you will start convincing others to believe it as well.

Your dialogue is your perception of yourself. It may not be true what you are saying, but in your world it’s real. If you constantly talk negative to yourself, try talking positive, and watch how it will reshape your life. Try this, take some post-it notes and write positive comments about the negative comments you always say about yourself. Post these up around a mirror, so that when you look at yourself all you see are positive comments. Your dialogue will change and soon the post-it notes can be thrown in the garbage because it will be habit.

The way you speak to yourself is ultimately how you see yourself. If you believe that no one likes you, your actions will change towards friends and family, and thus you’ve created this reality for yourself. Do you think that Donald Trump got to where he is today by having negative dialogue with himself? No, he got to be so successful because he created his own reality. He told himself he was strong, powerful and could do anything he wanted to do, and look at him now, that dialogue was his support system and helped shape his life.

It’s hard to break habit. We’ve all tried to break habit before and it’s not as simple as we’d like it to be. Routines are easy to fall into but hard to climb out of, they tend to drag us down because we are so comfortable that we become listless. So be aware of what you are talking to yourself about, be aware so that you can alter your thoughts. Try to break the pattern. Think of something you dislike, like a type of food, or an insect that gives you the creeps, and whenever you catch yourself speaking negative thoughts, I want you to envision that something you dislike. Watch how quickly those negative thoughts disappear when all of a sudden you picture a big hairy spider in front of your face.

It’s all about control; you need to stay in control of your thoughts. When you do this, doors open, the opportunities grow and you can achieve so much because you don’t set yourself back with limits. Positive thoughts give you motivation and that’s a healthy aspect to have in your life. This process sounds difficult but just remember to recognize how you talk to yourself and alter your dialogue. Be proud of whom you are and let the world be proud with you. Don’t compare yourself to others because you are a great individual. Talk to yourself how you would talk to a best friend. You would never put them down, so don’t put yourself down. Have great conversations with yourself, give yourself a boost, and show the people around you how confident and amazing you are. You deserve the attention, the good will.
