Finding Happines through Giving
When searching for happiness, we often have to look beyond the obvious. Sometimes it involves a little bit of giving to really get that feeling of accomplishment. I’m not talking about giving gifts or giving away materialistic items, I’m talking about giving time and effort to make a difference in someone’s life. Putting some effort into giving and helping others can be much more rewarding than always taking.
Although it seems rather easy, sometimes, time is one of the most wonderful gifts you can give someone. Just think, as a child what was the greatest thing for you and your parents? Of course, it was time spent together. It’s those memories of playing together, talking together and having someone that will listen to your crazy stories, that matters. When you see elderly people in homes, who usually can’t get out and about on their own, time matters to them. They cherish the moments when visitors come for an afternoon chat and they appreciate the time that loved ones put in to take them grocery shopping. It may not seem like a big deal, but for most, putting in that extra time means the world to them.
Now, ask yourself, do you give enough time to your loved ones? Are you able to give them those memories they will cherish, or help them when others won’t? If you’re looking for happiness, you will find that a lot of joy can come out of helping others. Helping others is a very precious gift, which costs nothing at all, making it easy to give!
I have a mission for you. When you’re done reading this, you should write down three ways you are going to give time this week. Why not call a friend, neighbor or a family member over for coffee; try inviting someone you usually wouldn’t, you will make a difference in their life and bring joy to their day as well.
Another way you can give time is by visiting someone who is cooped up in a home. Rather than just visiting to run errands, try baking some cookies or stopping by with a plant from your garden. Make a connection and make an effort to keep that connection. You will appreciate the look of thankfulness and excitement when they see how much you care. And in return, you too will feel that sense of happiness just knowing you were able to make a difference.
Giving in lieu of taking is much more rewarding and can create a huge source of inner happiness for you. But, more importantly, it makes an even bigger difference to the ones you are sharing it with. Giving is a win-win gift, so why not go out and give a little more often?
