Do You Have PMS?
No guys, this article isn’t just for women. The type of PMS I am talking about doesn’t draw gender boundaries!
This PMS stands for Personal Mission Statement. Do you have one? If you do, good for you! It’s very rare that people spend time planning out their PMS. Today, I am going to spend a few moments talking with you about the importance of having PMS.
Have you ever felt like you were just going through the motions each day? Or felt like you should be happy, but something is missing? Chances are you need a little direction. Let’s think of a company for a moment. I often go into companies to speak, and to teach, and I’m always interested to hear what their company mission statement is. A mission statement is an essential tool for a company. They align with the company vision (the picture of what the company wants to be in the ideal future) to provide direction and purpose for the day to day activities.
A personal mission statement takes the same idea, and applies it to your life. It aligns with your personal “someday” to provide direction and purpose. A properly created personal mission statement will focus your thoughts and energy, as well as your actions and decisions, at the things in life that are most important to you.
I can’t give you a canned layout for your personal mission statement because it really needs to be unique to you, but I can tell you a few key points that you need to keep in mind when you’re making one.
1. It must be motivational, reflect your passion, and encompass who you want to be as a person.
2. It must grow and change over time, as you grow and change.
3. It can be short or long, but is most effective if it’s something you can recite by memory.
4. It needs to be a part of your everyday life. Make it visible; use it for reflection time, anything you can do to incorporate it into each area of your life.
5. It should take into consideration the important relationships in your life, and how what you do affects them.
You DO have a purpose in this life. To live your life to the fullest, you need to do some self-discovery and define what that purpose is. A personal mission statement is a great way to commit to the person you want to be, and get more fulfillment and satisfaction out of your life.
So, the next time I ask you if you have PMS – I want you to proudly shout “YES I DO!!”
