The Art of Making People Smile
Making other people smile can have an incredibly positive effect not only on them, but also on you. Smiling helps release endorphins that boost your mood and can even help you become healthier over the long term. There are thousands of reasons to smile and even more to share that joy in making other people smile. Here are a few tips to get you started.
1. Get into a positive mindset. It's so easy to smile when you're thinking positively. Making people smile requires that you have that attitude, and they will be able to tell. Start every day by making a commitment to yourself to be positive no matter what comes your way that day. It may not be easy, but do all that you can to maintain a positive mindset.
2. Avoid negative influences. The next step towards becoming someone that is good at making people smile is to avoid the negative influences in your life. If there is music that brings you down or changes your mood, don't listen to it. If there are certain people in your life that are always negative and end up bringing you down with them, reduce the amount of time you spend with them. It is much easier to be positive and to smile when you reduce the amount of negative influences around you.
3. Practice smiling. We all know how to smile, it's a gift we have from birth. But sometimes we need to shake the dust off that gift and really take a look at how we smile. Is it a closemouthed, quick smile or a big and genuine smile that shows lots of teeth? Find a smile that not only makes you happy but is welcoming and friendly. A real, genuine, smile goes a long way towards making people smile.
4. Set some goals. If you're new to actively smiling at others and making people smile, it's a good idea to set a few goals for yourself. Decide to make at least five people smile per day and then keep increasing that number. While not everyone may smile back at you, the goal is to keep smiling at them. The more you do this, the greater your chances are of not only making people smile, but making yourself happy as well.
There's no requirement that says you have to spend your day making people smile. If you prefer to go through life not touching those around you, that is your choice. However, I encourage you to make a difference in the world - you could be touching the life of someone just with a single smile.
That's something that any one of us, regardless of our background or skills, can do. We have the power to make people smile. Isn't it time that you started taking advantage of this? Give it a try today and see just how many people you can make smile.
