A Well-Balanced New Year’s Resolution List

Category:

It’s that time of year again. We reflect on the past year and everything we accomplished. More importantly though, we focus on the year ahead and what we would like to achieve. We fill our resolution list with several items and start out slowly saying, “as soon as the holidays are over I will start”. Days go by, sometimes weeks and months, and nothing has budged to the completed side on our lists. Well, this year, let’s make it simple. Here are the main areas you should focus on, but, instead of creating lists for each, you should only focus on one goal in each section. If you complete it, there are no rules stating you can’t add more.

Work/School

Whether you’re in a part-time or full-time career, working from home or currently going to school, you should create one goal for this part of your life. If its work related choose something very important to you, whether that’s transitioning into a new career field or obtaining a salary that will allow you to quit working two jobs. If you’re in school, do the same. If you already know you’re going to graduate that year, try using a different goal – like obtaining honours or valedictorian. If you currently work and go to school, try focusing on two separate goals, like complete seven courses this year and move up to supervisor in your career.

With the Family

Life becomes busier and busier doesn’t it? Some of you may not have even noticed the New Year sneaking up on you. This year, make a goal that really counts when it comes to family. Whether it’s a trip to Disney Land, putting aside one night a week for family activities or learning how to ski as a family, you won’t realize how fast family opportunities pass you by until your kids are leaving for college. Life is definitely busy, so don’t try to make five goals based around your family, choose one that is very important to you and you know you can work hard at achieving.

With Friends

Everyone needs time with their friends. It’s a moment to get away, relieve some stress and focus on having fun again. This year, make yourself a goal that has to do with your friends. Stuck for ideas? Why not set out a goal of meeting 3 new friends or couples that you can hang out with. Not only will it provide you with a wider circle of friends, you’ll also get the benefit of learning new things and having new opportunities to explore.

Personal Achievements

Each year lots of people vow that they will start exercising, eat right and really focus on losing weight. They also want to be extra healthy, join a sports team and look as though they are 16 again. But, this year, you need to go easy on yourself. If you’re not used to exercising and eating healthy, don’t try and do both. Choose just one goal for yourself. You’re already busy enough and let’s face it, setting aside time to make healthy meals, exercise and join a sports team is going to suck away any time you have left and more. You’ll end up stressed out and when results don’t appear instantly, you can be assured your New Year’s goal will fly out the window. So, this year just choose one. If you want to focus in on losing weight, choose one thing to start with, like eating more vegetables. Once you’ve accomplished that goal and formed a positive habit from it, try adding 30 minutes of exercise three times a week to your goal list.

Remember, just because it’s January 1st again, doesn’t mean you have to overwhelm yourself with goals you know you won’t be able to meet, not because you don’t want to, but because your lifestyle is way too busy to. Let’s not start out the year in a stressful state of mind. Let’s start it out right.
